This practical three day course is designed for parents and carers supporting children or young people with SEND who may experience distress, crisis, or challenging behaviour.
Delivered by the team behind Differences Not Disabilities, this course combines professional knowledge, lived experience, and real world strategies that parents can actually use at home.

This course focuses on understanding behaviour, preventing escalation, and safely managing crisis situations while maintaining dignity and safety for everyone involved.

Day 1
Understanding behaviour and the person behind it
• Why behaviour happens
• Understanding triggers and functions of behaviour
• Bias, attitudes, and common misunderstandings around SEND
• How our responses influence behaviour
• Creating supportive environments
Day 2
Preventative strategies and de escalation
• Early warning signs and escalation patterns
• Practical de escalation techniques
• Communication strategies that reduce conflict
• Regulation and emotional support strategies
• Building consistent approaches at home
Day 3
Crisis management and safety
• What to do when situations become physical
• Keeping yourself and others safe
• Legal and ethical considerations
• Understanding proportional and reasonable responses
• Physical intervention techniques designed to protect and reduce harm
The physical intervention day focuses on safety and protection. Techniques are taught slowly and safely with a strong emphasis on reducing risk and ending situations quickly.
